Preserving the pride, one story at a time
Meet MRD Alumni Historian, Phil Pollard.
The legacy of the Marching Royal Dukes is more than halftime shows and homecoming parades—it’s a living, evolving story built by thousands of students over decades. At the heart of preserving that story is Phil Pollard, longtime MRD and passionate alumni historian. Phil has dedicated countless hours to capturing the rich history of the MRDs, curating a comprehensive digital archive that may be viewed at jmumrd.org. From vintage photographs and band rosters to audio clips and drill charts, Phil’s work brings our past to life and ensures it remains accessible for future generations. Most recently, below, you may explore a special digital timeline exhibit for the band's 50 & Beyond - 50th Anniversary Celebration, "Celebrating 50 years of Virginia's Finest," created in partnership with the JMU Special Collections and many others. Phillip Pollard
Phillip was with the Marching Royal Dukes from 1995-1996. He is described in the community as a “super alum” and is now writing a book exploring the history of the MRDs since inception. He tells us about what the MRD means to him, some hilarious stories about the fun times and pranks with the band, and how he sees the band developing in the next 50 years.
